A Whole Lot of Nothing!
By David C. Daoust

He suddenly awoke, eyes wide, gasping for air. He couldn’t remember what it was in his dream that frightened him so… but it didn’t matter, it flitted away. He relaxed on his cot, glad that whatever it was that made him so tense, was just a figment of his imagination.

His body was sore from the weeks work and he was glad it was Saturday. He had Saturdays off, which was sweet- came with seniority. He’d worked the station for so many years now, there wasn’t anyone above him anymore… beside maybe his boss.

He yawned a bit and stretched as he rose to his feet. He had just a small room, but it was all he needed. The cot could be replaced, but he worked so much he didn’t get much company anyhow. When he wasn’t working, he had a screen to hold his attention. He switched it on and flipped through channels.

He wasn’t surprised that nothing was on. He stopped at a couple cartoons, but beside that it was all infomercials. He found one about a juicer and left it on. The bs salesman was entertaining at least, and the ridiculously bad actors ‘oohing and awing’ kept him from any solid thoughts.

His mind drifted and he let it. He was determined not to have a solid thought, ‘til at least noon. As for the afternoon, well… he had a Whole Lot of Nothing planned.

April fools! Normally I celebrate this day in ‘Scribe of Nightsong’, but since it landed on Friday this year, I decided to make an exception. My plan is to fatten this post up a little though, so it doesn’t look too short. Otherwise it may give it all away before people even read it. (Although the ‘Some Guy’ image above, may be a tip-off, right out of the gate.)

Anywho, I have to come up with some filler.

I re-watched some old Star Trek movies(the old Shatner ones). Mainly because of my ‘Chronogenesis’ thing, may possibly be too similar to the ‘Genesis Project’ that was one of the central themes of those first few movies (well 2&3; not the first one so much). I really didn’t picture the two ideas to be the same thing at all. Although, I suppose someone with Star Trek goggles, may miss the difference. The Genesis Project was like this huge life bomb, that instantaneously terraformed planets. And actually I think it culminated in making a new planet out of nothing. I’m not sure I followed that last bit too clearly.

Chronogenesis was just some tech that sped up the plants growth. Not a bomb at all. I was picturing like these massive glowing orbs spread out over the moons, speeding up the growth, over a long period of time. Not a sudden matter rearranging blast! I probably should have taken the time to describe it, I just thought the ‘Chronogenesis movies’ were a funnier take, thus more interesting to read about.

Ultimately, I decided a seventy year old jungle would not be very impressive, so I needed a way to get the jungle really thriving. Since I already had the tech established with the whole ‘healing tech’ thing, I decided just to mix it into the same thing, as though it was the idea all along! Didn’t help that I named it ‘Chronogenesis’ maybe? Meh. I don’t know. Not like I had any complaints. Just saying- I can’t keep track of EVERY little SF idea that’s out there. Chronogenesis actually led to even more ideas with all the separate artificial biomes, spread throughout the galaxy, but I don’t want to spoil anything before I get to it.

That fattened the post up some! But I can do better…

Bits of random trivia-

Today’s post was actually written as part of the original ‘Second Sun Saga’ I came up with like ten years ago. I actually wrote the first three Colin Vice pages (which starts the whole serial) like six years before I ever resurrected my site as Rowdy Dead. So I’d say that the ‘Some Guy’s’, actual name, was probably Grandpa Haul- at least an early version of him. (There was a bit more to it, that I left out; I only needed the tidbit for the prank to work.)

Colin Vice was originally an RP character I used to play in a game with friends. The game was set in the ‘Firefly’ universe. So yeah, he was a pretty easy fit into the ‘Second Sun’ universe. Firefly’s where I got a lot of the inspiration in the beginning. That and Star Wars, of course. I’d also have to put ‘Cowboy Bebop’ on that list, along with ‘Trigun’, and other ‘Space Westerns’ that seem to be more popular in anime and manga.

Zhou is pronounced Joe. I wanted it to be like ‘Zow!’ but then I learned that isn’t how it is pronounced, so I decided just to embrace it. Sweet Honey Joe.

Also ‘Mari Swan’- I been saying ‘Marie Swan’ all this time. I’m pretty sure I’m the only one reading it that way. I think everyone else was going with Mary, which is weird because I have a sister named Mary. The character was named before she became a central character. Her name is ‘Marie Swan’, spelled Mari. Just a fact.

Oh, and while I’m at it, my last name ‘Daoust’, is pronounced Doe! like a deer, a female deer. Only, I’m a dude, a male dude…

I’m just rambling on at this point.

I think that’s probably fat enough. Have a great day!
