A Whole Lot of Nothing! 47
Craiden sat with his back against the wall. Colin was next to him and the two now unarmed soldiers sat on a bench on the other side of the cell. No one was happy with the situation, especially Craiden. He had lived his life completely free of any authority over him. Government rules and laws, money and contracts, held no interest to the First waver.
First wavers had flown to the outskirts of civilization to live free lawless lives in a place most people had no interest in. In fact the only reason this freedom was available at all, was that the moon was so barren of resources. The shackles that still bound his wrists were an affront to his way of life. The nuisance of the ever present cough in his chest, only a reminder of what can come of these outside influences on his life.
He felt as the ships engines were fired up. It was not hard to guess that these people were evacuating the moon. This was the only good thing that came of this in Craiden’s opinion. He only wished he was on the ground for the evacuation. He would have loved to see this massive beacon of civilization, everything he hated, take off into the stars- leaving his home, hopefully for good.
Craiden was unclear on the situation outside of the cell. The armed soldiers that had taken them into custody had vanished some time ago. He half expected to hear gun fire; it was obvious these men were not of the Red Faction. What exactly their plans were for this ship was beyond Craiden’s scope.
Craiden did not know if those that locked him up knew of his involvement with the Drone Raid on Grady, nor did he even know if they knew he was a first waver. Craiden had only made mention of it briefly, and only to the dark haired stranger.
Colin’s interest in his knowledge of the Drones origins went no further than confirmation that they came from an abandoned ship Craiden and his scavenging crew had found in the desert. Why the dark haired stranger was so interested, Craiden could only guess. All of his guesses led to the conclusion that he had to keep an eye on this stranger from now on, a paranoia that came with stealing, a paranoia he was familiar with.
It was at the very moment the small piece of thin wire he had managed to wiggle into the inner circuitry of the energy shackles, scrambling them enough to shut down the energy binds causing the clasps to release and slip free of his wrist, that Colin suddenly dropped his shackles as well. The difference between the two… was that Colin’s shackles seemed to be fully operational. How exactly Colin had managed to slip his binders without turning them off first, was a trick Craiden was unfamiliar with.
“Well, Fantastic,” one of the soldiers said sarcastically as he gestured at his unshackled hands, “You got the shackles off! How do you propose to deal with the cell door?”
Craiden and Colin, who had momentarily been impressed by the others achievement, seemed stumped as the focus changed to the cell door.
